Trip to Black Country Living Museum and Birmingham Hippodrome Theatre, 9th & 10th September, 2026

30 members of our U3A set off for the Black Country Living Museum at 8.30am on Wednesday 9th.  We had a flawless journey down the M1 and M42 arriving as planned just before 12 noon.  The weather was kind and everyone had a wonderful afternoon at the 29-acre site, visiting shops and pubs from the 1930’s, 40’s, 60’s and 70’s.  A majority availed themselves of the tasty fish and chips (cooked in beef dripping) at Hobbs & Sons Restaurant, delicious!

There were the tobacconist and sweet shop.

I’m sure many of you will remember seeing these chocolate bars and cigarettes in the shops when you were younger.

And the Pub.

Last but not least, the Health Centre

After an overnight stay at the Park Inn by Radisson Hotel, in Walsall (which proved to be a good choice), we had a very good breakfast and set off to Birmingham city centre, arriving at 11am.  We were dropped off just outside the Birmingham Hippodrome theatre and everyone had free time in the city, visiting the art gallery, library and the cathedral and no doubt some shopping and lunch.

Just before 2.00pm, we all took our seats for the matinee performance of Mrs Doubtfire the musical, I know some were unsure what to expect, but after the show everyone said they had thoroughly enjoyed it, some so much they were planning to take their families to see it in Leeds later this year!  It was a brilliant show and made everyone laugh.

At the end of the show, we embarked on our Glenns’ Coach at about 5.00pm and after a slightly tortuous journey out of Birmingham along the A38, we arrived back at Ethel Ward car park, just before 9.00pm.

Thank you to all those who came on the trip, and to Glenn for a smooth ride there and back.  So glad you had a great time and look forward to seeing you all again soon on another trip.

Get involved in u3a Eye - an opportunity to showcase your photography skills.

We are running a rolling photography project to encourage members to take and submit pictures of their surroundings.
We post a different theme every two months and invite you to submit your photo on that topic.

We are looking for any interesting photos and interpretations of the theme. Anything which has captured your imagination or caught your eye.

At the end of every deadline, we will choose and publish up to 15 photos in the online gallery below.
Please only submit one photo per person, per theme. Your photo should also not include any identifiable people. Your photograph must be derived from an original photograph taken by you.

This time, we are looking for your best and most interesting photos on the theme of 'Disruption'.
Judges pick based not only on the quality of the image but also on the interpretation of the theme. We are now opening each theme for submissions for two months.
Deadline for submissions: 12 midday on Thursday 24 September 2026.
